BMBF Project „MedWater“ within the GRoW initiative

MedWater’s regional focus is on the Mediterranean, with case studies in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, France and Italy. The improved management of water resources takes into account not only human consumption but also the needs of ecosystems. Subgoals of the project are:

Identification and quantification of relevant indicators for the state of the resource and demand (human, environment),
Determination of the relative importance of external factors on the resource/requirements system,
Derivation of the interaction between hydrological-hydrogeological system behaviour and water trade for integrated water resource assessment.
work priorities

System characterization (resource-consumer) and prognosis modelling of the hydrological-hydrogeological coupled processes.
Definition of influencing factors and formulation of scenarios (trend, nature conservation, economy)
Prognosis of the resource-consumer system for defined scenarios and evaluation of the results under the aspects of sustainability, ecology, economy and social aspects.

Multi-criteria optimisation of management with regard to target variables (e.g. virtual water, extent of seawater desalination, surface and groundwater abstraction, biodiversity, groundwater quality, water accessibility).
Derivation of pareto-optimal solutions and development scenarios taking stakeholder interests and regional development goals into account.
