We are excited to highlight our established and growing session at EGU 2025, focusing on the complex dynamics of fractured-porous and karstified aquifers. With two oral time blocks and a dedicated poster session, this year’s session reflects the strong and continued interest in understanding these critical subsurface systems across the geosciences:

HS8.2.9: Multiscale characterization of structure, flow and transport processes in fractured-porous media and karst systems

The session is co-convened by Marco Dentz, Philippe Renard, Jeffrey De’Haven Hyman, and Franci Gabrovšek, who bring together expertise spanning hydrogeology, numerical modeling, and the physics of porous media.

We are also honored to welcome Prof. Robert Zimmerman from Imperial College London as our invited speaker. He brings decades of expertise and influential contributions to the understanding of flow and transport in fractured-porous media, and he recently published his new book “Fluid Flow in Fractured Rocks”.

The session brings together a broad range of research addressing all spatial and temporal scales, from pore to field scale, employing methods such as laboratory experimentation, field work, numerical simulations, geophysical imaging, and analytical modeling. Topics of interest include:

  • Characterization of fracture and karst network structure

  • Flow and transport in the vadose and phreatic zones

  • Infiltration and recharge dynamics in heterogeneous media

  • Coupling between scales and zones

  • Reactive transport, speleogenesis, and system responses to boundary conditions

  • Applications in water resource management, geothermal energy, CO₂ sequestration, environmental remediation, and natural hazard assessment

We are looking forward to a fruitul exchange of ideas and new insights during EGU 2025 in Vienna. Whether you are attending to present, network, or catch up on the latest advances, this session promises to be a key meeting point for anyone working on flow and transport in fractured and karst media.

Hope to see you at EGU 2025 in person!
